Hawthorn in Autumn

I never cease to be amazed how these little trees survive as they do. This one is shown growing high on a granite outcrop at Brentor, near Tavistock in West Devon. This one is at the rear of the famous Brentor Church in a very windy and exposed location. The hills of Dartmoor can be seen in the background. I took this shot yesterday, 04 10 2010, in evening light, and the signs of Autumn are evident in the leaves and berries.

Hi Colin, nice to hear from you :-) I love the Hawthorns too and have a lot of shots from my side of Dartmoor. They are all stunted and small, but I think they are magnificent, and will be happy to upload some more pictures , some new and some up to three years old.

You have the location close to the site, but the actual location is to the South West of the Brentor marker on the map, the OS grid ref is SX 471 804. It is close to the minor road from Tavistock to Lydford and the church on top of the tor is a tourist attraction, and can be seen on the satellite map if you zoom in as far as possible. There is a small car park at the bottom, and it is a steep walk up to the top to the church. Well worth a visit on a dry day , and dont forget to look at the tree, should you ever come down this way, the views are terrific!!!!
